Dreaming of crystal-clear waters, warm island breezes, and a vibrant atmosphere? Roatan, Honduras, ticks all the boxes! We chose this beautiful island for our honeymoon in February 2024, and let me tell you the perfect decision. The weather was absolutely perfect, from our flight to our stay and all the adventures in between, everything fell into place. I will admit there were a couple of small misses, but honestly, the overall experience was unforgettable, to the point we’re still talking about it 2 years later. We had the best time soaking in the magic of Roatan!

The Flight

Roatan is more accessible than people think. We flew Kansas City → Houston (short layover) → Roatan — total travel time was around five hours. On the way back it was Roatan → Dallas → Kansas City. Both routings were straightforward.

The flights themselves? Smooth. Customs on the way back? A whole other story.

Hotel Pickup

The hotel took care of our transportation both to and from the airport, and it was seamless. Our driver, Alex, was fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to share local tips. Starting the trip with such a positive experience really set the tone for the rest of our stay.

The Beach House at Half Moon Bay

This was our home for the trip and honestly we couldn’t have chosen better. The Beach House is a smaller, intimate property right on Half Moon Bay. Not a sprawling resort. More like the kind of place where the staff know your name by day two and the sunset from your balcony makes you question every life choice that isn’t “move here immediately.”

We booked a top-floor room and it was the right call. Clean, comfortable, proper AC (crucial in February even though the weather was perfect), and a balcony view that honestly looked fake. Like someone had set up a backdrop.

We were slightly nervous about noise — Sundowners Bar is literally next door. But the street and beach activity naturally quieted down in the evenings, and it never disturbed us. 10/10 would book the top floor again.Click here – The Beach House Roatan

Now the staff.. This is where The Beach House really earns it. The staff went genuinely out of their way — helping us book restaurant reservations at spots off-property, coordinating with Sun Divers for water activities, arranging island tours. Not in a pushy concierge way. In a “we actually want your trip to be great” way.

The Beach House didn’t just provide a place to stay; they also helped us make the most of our time in Roatan. The staff went out of their way to ensure we had access to some of the island’s best experiences:

  • Restaurant Reservations: They assisted with securing tables at other highly recommended dining spots, making it easy to explore Roatan’s culinary scene.
  • Sun Divers Accommodations: For diving enthusiasts, or you just love being in the water; the hotel arranged accommodations with Sun Divers, one of the top diving operators in the area. The convenience of having this coordinated through the hotel was unbeatable.
  • Island Tours: Whether you’re interested in cultural excursions or adventure-filled activities, The Beach House staff can help arrange personalized island tours to suit your preferences.

Their attention to detail and willingness to accommodate made our trip truly special.

Dining at Mildelmar

The hotel’s restaurant, Mildelmar, was a highlight of our trip. We found ourselves having lunch and dinner there most days. The food was consistently delicious, and the drinks, YES PLEASE! The staff made the experience even better; they were personable, fun, and truly seemed to enjoy their work. I can’t wait to go back just to see their friendly faces again! (And yes, I’m terrible with names, so unfortunately, I can’t give individual shoutouts.)

Food and Coffee Spots You Can’t Miss

Roatan is a foodie’s paradise. Here are some of the standout spots we enjoyed:

  • Cafe de Palo: A cozy spot with great coffee and treats.
  • The Chocolate Factory: A must-visit for any chocolate lover.
  • Pura Vida: Vibrant dishes with fresh ingredients.
  • Sandy Buns: Breakfasts that hit the spot. You MUST try the cinnamon rolls!
  • Roatan Island Brewing: Locally brewed beers with a relaxed vibe.
  • Gelato: Because who doesn’t love a cold treat in paradise?
  • Creole’s Rotisserie: Comfort food at its finest.
  • Junior’s Patio Pizzeria: Perfect for a casual pizza night. (BRING THE BUG SPRAY!)
  • Sun Divers Bar: Great drinks and a fun atmosphere.
  • Sweet Beach Lady: If you see a sweet lady selling donuts on the beach! Purchase, you will not regret it!
  • Empanadas: Another I wish I could remember the name, you can’t miss it if you’re walking the street off of Half Moon Bay, a sweet lady selling Empanadas, along with other items, it was late so she only have empanadas left and were they delicious!

Honest Tips Before You Go

  • Book a top-floor room. The balcony view alone is worth it. Trust us on this one.
  • Budget extra time at customs on the way back. It will take longer than you expect. Don’t book a tight connection.
  • Bring bug spray. Especially for evening dining spots. Junior’s Pizzeria will remind you if you forget.
  • Use the hotel staff. They know everyone and can get you into places and experiences you wouldn’t find on your own.
  • Walk Half Moon Bay in the evenings. That’s when the local vendors come out — the empanada lady, the donut lady. Some of the best food on the trip came from a walk we took without a plan.
  • February is ideal. Weather was perfect — warm, sunny, no rain. Peak honeymoon conditions.
  • Don’t rush. Roatan is a slow island. Match its energy and you’ll leave obsessed. Try to cram in everything and you’ll miss what makes it special.

Final Verdict

Roatan isn’t the flashiest Caribbean destination. It doesn’t have the Instagram saturation of Turks and Caicos or the name recognition of Cancun. And that is exactly why you should go.

It’s genuine. The people are warm, the water is unreal, the food is better than anyone prepares you for, and there’s a quietness to it that makes you actually decompress. We went for our honeymoon and left already planning a return trip. That tells you everything.
